OUR FACILITY
Every last detail of our facility has been designed with the comfort of your companion and yourself in mind. Since most people and pets feel stress when they have to visit the veterinarian, the waiting room and waiting lounge were designed to look like welcoming sunrooms. Our exam rooms were designed to feel welcoming and home-like as well. For the hospital, we selected warm fiberglass cages instead of stainless steel, and we have separated cat and dog wards. Hospital tours are welcomed.
LABORATORY DIAGNOSTIC PROGRAM
Because our companions cannot speak and may not show symptoms until illness has progressed, we routinely perform laboratory diagnostics to better evaluate their health status. This is an integral part of our preventive program, our medical work-ups, and our pre-anesthetic testing. Our in-house clinical laboratory can provide immediate results in the face of an emergency. When specialized or routine testing is required, we work with expert veterinary laboratories to obtain quick results.
At Companions Animal Hospital we use acupuncture as a natural pathway to wellness. This holistic treatment gently stimulates targeted body points to promote healing, reduce pain, and alleviate inflammation. Whether your pet is managing chronic conditions, recovering from surgery, or simply in need of a little extra care, veterinary acupuncture helps restore balance and enhance overall well-being. Embrace a harmonious blend of traditional wisdom and modern veterinary medicine—a soothing, effective way to boost mobility, ease anxiety, and support your companion’s quality of life.
Experience the revitalizing benefits of red light laser therapy—a cutting-edge, non-invasive treatment that promotes healing and eases discomfort for your pet. This innovative therapy works by penetrating deep into tissues, stimulating cellular repair, reducing inflammation, and improving circulation. Ideal for managing chronic pain, post-surgical recovery, arthritis, and other conditions, red light laser therapy helps accelerate healing while enhancing overall energy and mobility. Trust in this safe, soothing approach to support your pet's journey toward a healthier, happier life.
OUR PRESCRIPTION POLICY: We do not accept requests from outside pharmacies due to the risk of wrong medications, wrong doses, and the significant time it takes away from patient care. We know your pet's health status, correct drugs and dosages, health conditions that may require specific drugs and all medications your pet takes so we can avoid drug interactions. You can get refills from us by picking up medication from our hospital or ordering through our online pharmacy with 10% off your first purchase. If you still prefer to order from an outside pharmacy, you must pick up a written prescription from the hospital which you can submit to your pharmacy of choice.
When considering options for purchasing medication, pet owners have many choices, including online pharmacies and mail-order catalogs. But where can you truly get the best value for your money? Who can offer you the most reliable and personalized service? Who has the most complete medical information on your pets, and the ability to anticipate drug interactions or other problems that can result from inappropriately administering medication? Before you purchase your next prescription or medication refill, ask us about our fully stocked pharmacy.
We maintain a large inventory of veterinary pharmaceutical products and medications, including flea, tick, and heartworm preventive products. You can rely on us whether your pet requires medication for a chronic medical condition or needs short-term medication while recovering from an illness, injury, or surgery. When you purchase medications from our pharmacy, you can rest assured that your pet’s medications were obtained from safe, reliable sources and stored under optimal conditions. Our trained staff will fill your prescriptions with care as well as attention to detail and your pet’s specific needs. You can count on us to provide you with accurate information about your pet’s medications, including proper dosing information, and to alert you to any potential drug side effects or interactions. We stand behind every product that we dispense and are here if you experience any problems with your medication after you return home.
We have learned that the microchip company Save This Life whom we have used for the past several years has gone out of business. If your pet has an affected chip it will need to be re-registered. Your pet's chip MAY be affected if the number starts with 991 or 900164. We will be available to help you do this should you require assistance.
Please rest assured that if your pets chip is affected, the chip is still working and scannable, it just needs to be re-registered on an active database so your pet can be reunited with you in the event he or she gets lost.
There is a free database to re-register your chip with:

Companions Animal Hospital now uses "Home Again" microchips.
Each year, thousands of pets go missing, and many don’t make it back home. Many pets (especially indoor pets) don’t wear collars or tags. Even if your pet wears a collar and identification tag, collars can break off and tags can become damaged and unreadable, so these forms of identification may not be enough to ensure your pet’s safe return. Your pet needs a form of identification that is reliable and can’t get lost, stolen, or damaged. A microchip is a safe, simple form of identification that can significantly increase the chance that your pet will return safely.
A microchip is about the size and shape of a grain of rice and is placed underneath your pet's skin between the shoulder blades. Microchip implantation takes only a few minutes and is very safe. Each microchip is unique and carries vital information about your pet—including your name, address, and contact information. When a microchip is implanted, the pet owner is given a registration form to complete. Registering the number on the microchip includes your pet in a national pet recovery database. Veterinary hospitals, animal shelters, and animal control offices across the country are equipped with special electronic scanners that can detect the microchip and read the identification number. If a lost pet is picked up by animal control or found by a good Samaritan and presented to a veterinarian, a quick scan of the microchip reveals the identification number. A toll-free phone call to the pet recovery database alerts the microchip company that a lost pet has been identified. The pet owner can then be contacted and reunited with his or her pet!
Young puppies and kittens can receive microchips, but even if your pet is already an adult, you should consider microchipping. Even indoor pets can get outside accidentally and get lost, so if you’re relying on other forms of identification, you could be placing your pet at risk. Microchipping is a safe, effective way to help ensure your pet’s return if the unthinkable happens.
Pain Management Program
We believe the management of pain is a moral obligation, and prescribe the most effective forms of pain relief tailored specifically to your companion's needs. Excellence in pain management is also linked with quicker recovery times and less post-surgical complications. We address and treat surgery-associated pain, dental pain, orthopedic pain, and chronic pain. We use a multi-modal approach to pain management, and tailor a treatment plan to your pet’s individual needs. We use traditional protocols (medication), as well as complementary protocols (herbal, nutraceutical, acupuncture and, most recently, laser pain management, which has shown to be a gentle and effective modality for managing all forms of pain).
X-rays provide a detailed, non-invasive look inside your pet's body, helping us quickly and accurately identify issues such as fractures, joint problems, and other internal conditions. This precise imaging technique is essential for early diagnosis and effective treatment planning, ensuring that your beloved companion receives the prompt care necessary for a swift recovery and long-term health.
The doctors are knowledgeable and experienced in surgical techniques and are prepared to handle your companion's needs. To ensure your companion's safety, we perform thorough pre-anesthetic testing. We use the safest anesthesia protocols and monitoring equipment and offer personalized recovery nursing with frequent progress reports. The best care for your pet is our top priority. If your pet will be best-served with the care of a surgical specialist, a smooth referral to the specialist will be arranged for you. We will keep in close contact with the specialist, so that the individualized care and communication that you are used to with us will be maintained, even when your pet is in the care of another doctor.
Anesthesia Services
Anesthesia safety and comfort is our prime concern at Companions. Just like in human medicine, pre-anesthesia testing is completed, which is an important step in minimizing anesthesia risks. An anesthesia protocol is determined by your doctor based on test results and the individual needs of your pet. Pain relief is automatically incorporated into every surgical procedure that is done here. Each pet is assigned their own anesthesia nurse the morning of the procedure. Each patient has an IV catheter and receives IV fluids, which is important for anesthesia safety. We use state-of-the-art monitoring equipment, which monitors blood pressure, ECG, pulse oximetry and capnography. Companions uses Sevoflurane gas anesthesia, which is the gold standard in human and pediatric medicine, and is also the safest gas anesthesia for veterinary patients as well. A small minority of animal hospitals use sevoflurane. We are very proud to have this service in our hospital, and to offer this benefit to all of our anesthesia patients, no matter how young or aged they may be!
Our Life Stages Program & Individualized Vaccine Program
Our life stages approach to disease prevention and management will be discussed with you during each visit. Whether you are starting out with a new companion, or working to maintain the health of an aged one, we will design a program to meet your pet's individual needs. Your companion's annual check-up will include a discussion of a vaccine protocol that meets the needs of your individual pet. We feel that your companion's lifestyle as well as his or her age plays an important role in type and frequency of vaccines administered. We will also discuss the use of vaccine titers, which may be important in pets with underlying health concerns, or in older pets. After your visit with us, you will leave with your companion's health report card in hand, as well as clear directions as to what can be done to ensure your bond with your pet is strengthened and lengthened, our ultimate goal at Companions Animal Hospital.
Our doctors are available to consult with you about any behavioral and obedience concerns you may have. This is especially important with new puppy companions. A good portion of your initial puppy visits with us will review basic training guidelines which have been proven to be most effective with veterinary behaviorists. We also commonly consult on other behavioral issues, such as separation anxiety, thunderstorm or noise phobia, fear of strangers, behavioral house-soiling, and many other issues that pet owners face on a regular basis.
Does your best friend have bad breath? Despite what many pet owners may believe, “dog breath” is not just a nuisance – it’s a sign of an unhealthy mouth. Bad breath is caused by bacteria. Over time, bacteria lead to plaque and tartar buildup on your pet’s teeth. The result is bad breath, reddened gums, and other common signs of dental disease. As dental disease progresses, other signs can include drooling, discomfort while chewing, and loose or missing teeth. Even if you’re using treats and chews to help control tartar, these are frequently not enough to keep dental disease in check. Ask us about the best ways to control plaque and help protect your pet from dental disease.
Dental hygiene is an important part of your pet's health, because dental disease can be associated with other serious health problems such as heart disease and kidney disease. But how do you know if your pet has a healthy mouth? Let us examine your pet’s teeth and gums to help determine if there are any dental issues you should know about. After a brief visual examination, we may recommend a more detailed examination (which requires sedation), a dental cleaning, or options for at-home dental care.
Even if you think your pet’s teeth and gums are fine, we can offer expert advice to help you keep them that way! Dental health shouldn’t be taken for granted. Fortunately, many dental problems can be managed through at-home care and by bringing your pet to us for regular dental checkups and teeth cleanings.
We want your pet to live a long, healthy life, and we understand that maintaining a healthy mouth is part of that. Your pet’s health is important to us, so let us help you with this commitment. Call today to discuss your pet’s dental care needs and how we can help!
When quality of life of a beloved companion begins to deteriorate, we will counsel you on the options available to you. If you or your family are not ready for humane euthanasia, we will discuss hospice options with you. Hospice is the humane care that is given to an animal when they have a terminal illness, where invasive treatment is no longer warranted or recommended. Our goal with hospice is for that pet to have the best quality of life possible, where they are eating and, most importantly, not in pain. When the time comes for euthanasia, the doctors and staff will try to make the experience as peaceful as possible, both for you and for your pet. The doctors and staff have gone through this with their own pets, so they know how you feel. You will have the option to be with your pet during the procedure, which is very humane and peaceful. You will be welcomed to stay as long as you wish, before or after the euthanasia. A clay paw print will be made by the staff for you, which many cherish for years to come. Final resting arrangements for your pet will also be discussed with you.
If you prefer for your pet to pass on in their own environment, home euthanasia provides a compassionate, peaceful alternative for saying farewell to your beloved pet. By choosing this service, your pet can remain in a familiar, serene environment where anxiety is minimized and comfort is assured. This approach allows for a truly personal goodbye, surrounded by loved ones and cherished memories, easing the emotional stress for both your pet and your family. With the compassionate guidance of our experienced veterinary team, every step is handled with the utmost care and respect, ensuring a dignified, gentle transition during a difficult time.
From the very first day you bring a new pet home through the final days of its life, nutrition plays a critical role in your pet’s overall health and well-being. Many pet owners take nutrition for granted, in part because the availability of so many nutritionally complete commercial diets has taken much of the guesswork out of choosing a suitable diet for a pet. However, did you know that your pet’s nutritional needs change with age and activity level? Did you know that specially formulated diets can assist in the management of various medical conditions, including kidney disease, diabetes, arthritis, and heart disease? Do you know how many calories your pet should have each day and whether you are over- or underfeeding? Are you comfortable reading and interpreting pet food labels?
Whether your pet has special dietary needs or simply needs to shed (or gain) a few pounds, our nutritional counseling services can help you accomplish your goals and keep your pet in good health. We offer counseling in dietary selection and feeding practices for pets during various life stages, such as growth, pregnancy, nursing, and the “golden years.” If your pet has a medical condition, we can help you select the most appropriate diet to suit your pet’s needs.
It can be easy for a pet owner to become overwhelmed by the available selection of pet foods, all of which claim to have specific benefits for pets. We can offer expert advice to help you negotiate the complicated array of choices. Let our nutritional counseling service help you achieve and maintain optimal nutrition for your pet.
There was a time when parasites like fleas, ticks, and roundworms were considered mostly a nuisance. Now, however, we know that parasites can cause serious illness and even death in pets. For example, ticks can transmit infections like Lyme disease, and fleas can transmit tapeworms and Bartonella – the bacteria that causes “cat-scratch fever” in humans. Another type of parasite, called a heartworm, is transmitted by mosquitoes. Heartworms live in your pet’s lungs and heart, causing damage to these organs, and sometimes even death. Intestinal parasites, like roundworms and hookworms, also threaten pets and are even transmissible to humans.
You may not always be able to tell if your pet has parasites. Fleas can hide under your pet’s fur, and some ticks are very tiny (only the size of a pinhead), so they are very difficult to find. Intestinal parasites like roundworms can cause diarrhea and other problems, but many infected pets don’t show any signs of illness at all.
Fortunately, we can recommend tests to tell if your pet has parasites. We can also examine your pet for evidence of fleas, ticks, or other parasites. Our expert staff can recommend medications to help control fleas, ticks, heartworms, and intestinal parasites. Preventing parasites in your pets also helps protect children and other family members, so let’s work together to protect your pets and family.
Veterinary examinations and parasite testing are important ways to protect your pet’s health. Let our knowledgeable staff provide you with a comprehensive parasite control program. We can recommend a schedule for parasite testing, discuss what signs of parasites you can look for at home, review ways to control parasites in and around your home, discuss treatment options if your pet has parasites, and recommend ways to control and prevent parasites in the future.
Parasites are not just a nuisance. They can carry serious diseases that affect your pet’s overall health and longevity. Let us help you protect your pet.
The doctors at Companions Animal Hospital recognize the special needs of our geriatric companions. Your visit will always begin with a thorough discussion of your senior pet's medical history, and any health issues you are concerned about at home. A comprehensive evaluation of your pet will be performed, and further discussions of findings, management or treatment options will follow. With the recent advances in veterinary medicine, there is so much more that can be done to prevent as well as manage geriatric pet health problems.
Our advanced imaging tools work together to give us a detailed look inside your pet, ensuring they receive the best possible care. Using ultrasound, we can non-invasively capture real-time images of soft tissues and organs, helping detect conditions early and guide treatments with precision. Endoscopy offers a direct examination of internal structures, making it easier to diagnose digestive issues without the need for extensive surgery. And with echocardiograms, we can meticulously assess your pet’s heart health—evaluating structure, function, and rhythm—to catch potential cardiac concerns before they become serious. Together, these cutting-edge techniques empower us to diagnose accurately and tailor treatments that keep your companion happy and thriving.
